After the tsunami of December 2004 the Thai Government proposed a programme of safety measures and development for the main tourist beaches affected. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) invited Space Architects co-ordinate this project.

Working in close collaboration with our chosen experts and specialists in disaster warning and mitigation from around the world, we produced a master plan study. This included recommendations for observation and warning points, escape routes to higher ground which would enable the evacuation of up to 10,000 people in 15 minutes, as well as improvements to the pedestrian and traffic flows and use of the main beach front spaces. The programme also provided for the training of building owners along the beach front in procedures for emergency evacuations.
